SC4 Women’s Basketball Makes the National Tournament for the First Time in Ten Years
Last week, our Women’s basketball team competed in the NJCAA DII Women’s Basketball National Tournament. This tournament hosted 20 teams, consisting of 16 district champions (SC4 was the Great Lakes District A Champions) and four at-large bids chosen by the NJCAA committee. Of these nationally ranked teams, SC4 was the 15th seed. This marks the first time since the 2015-16 academic year that the SC4 Women’s team has attended the tournament.
In the first game against College of Lake County (seed 18), SC4 won 75-70. Bre Jefferson and Precious Fields each scored 24 points in this game.

After this, SC4 faced the #2-ranked team, The Community College of Baltimore County, Essex, and lost 81-70. Bre Jefferson scored 25 points and hit a three-quarter-court buzzer-beater to end the first half, which was featured at #8 on SportCenter Top 10 plays.

SC4’s third game with #10 Mid Michigan College went into double overtime. Our girls narrowly lost this game 88-80. Bre Jefferson scored 28 points, and Bailey Gormely hit a three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Mike Groulx coached the team from 2011 to 2014, leading the team to the conference three times. After leaving to pursue other opportunities, he returned in 2023 as head coach. This year marks the fourth time he has led the team to the national tournament. Coach Groulx had this to say:
“It was a tale of two teams. We started the season without our all-league post player which was a big loss itself. We then got Amanda back and added two transfers in early January. We then had to figure out personnel and rotations once again. Our conference is one of the toughest in the country and we dropped three league games by a combined 21pts. This was the most conference loses in the regular season in my career. I had to grow tremendously as a coach and our team had to grow tremendously collectively.
Overall it was a tremendous growth from our team of handling adversity and sticking together. ‘IN’ became our motto heading into the region tournament:
Believe IN
Buy IN
Lock IN
All In “
