Staff Spotlight—Tracy Dunsmore
Tracy Dunsmore is the Dean of Health Sciences and Director of Nursing at SC4 and has worked for the college since 2020.
Tracy’s passion for nursing developed when she was young after her grandfather became sick. She and her family spent significant time with her grandfather at McLaren Port Huron Hospital. She developed a strong desire to give back and improve the lives of others, and according to Tracy, it “felt natural” to enter the nursing field.
Tracy graduated from the SC4 ADN program in 1999. She continued with her education in 2013, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing from American Sentinel University and a master’s degree in nursing in 2019 from Capella University.
Tracy worked at Bon Secours Hospital in the cardiac observation unit and was later hired by McLaren Port Huron Hospital. During her 20 years at McLaren Port Huron Hospital, she practiced as a cardiac stepdown nurse for eight years. She continued on the path of nursing leadership, holding various leadership positions. She started as the House Supervisor and entered nurse management in 2011 as the Manager for the Observation and Orthopedic & Bariatric Medical Surgical Units. She ended her time at McLaren as the nurse manager of the Cardiac Stepdown and Cardiac Observation Units.
Tracy was hired by SC4 in 2020 as the Director of Nursing and was promoted in 2021 to also be the Dean of Health Sciences. As the Dean of Health Sciences and Director of Nursing, Tracy coordinates with the directors of the Radiologic Technology and Respiratory Therapy Programs and oversees both the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Practical Nursing (PN) Programs, partners with community resources and ensures the programs meet state regulations.
“I enjoy this role at SC4. I’m able to build more relationships with community partners and be a part of developing the nursing workforce and a nurturing future in our community.”
Tracy is a trained site reviewer for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and has visited one other institution pursuing nursing accreditation. Her insights on the process and familiarity with programs throughout the nation have been extremely valuable in guiding SC4’s accreditation efforts for the PN and ADN programs.
In her spare time, Tracy enjoys yoga, crafting, gardening and spending time with her family. She is married to her husband, Christopher, and has an adult daughter, Mariah and four cats.
